BMI Calculator

Calculate your Body Mass Index from height and weight, in metric or US units. BMI is a simple screening measure for body weight categories.

Your BMI
22.9
Healthy weight - BMI categories: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5-24.9 healthy, 25-29.9 overweight, 30+ obese.

What BMI means (and its limits)

BMI = weight / height² and is a quick population-level screening tool. It does not distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes may show a high BMI while being very lean, and it is not a medical diagnosis. For a full picture, talk to a healthcare provider.

Frequently asked questions

Metric: weight (kg) / height (m)². US: (weight (lb) / height (in)²) x 703. Both give the same number.
A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered a healthy range for most adults. Below 18.5 is underweight; 25-29.9 is overweight; 30 and above is obese.
Not always. BMI cannot separate muscle from fat, so muscular individuals may be classified as overweight. Use it as a rough guide, not a diagnosis.
