The Basic Formula: Annual Salary from Hourly Rate

If you are paid by the hour, converting to an annual salary uses this simple formula:

Annual Salary = Hourly Rate × Hours per Week × 52 Weeks

For example, if you earn $25/hour and work a standard 40-hour week:

$25 × 40 hours × 52 weeks = $52,000/year

This assumes you work all 52 weeks with no unpaid time off. If you take unpaid vacation, you would multiply by fewer weeks.

Going the Other Way: Hourly Rate from Annual Salary

To find your hourly rate from a known annual salary, reverse the formula:

Hourly Rate = Annual Salary ÷ (Hours per Week × 52)

A $75,000 annual salary with a 40-hour work week:

$75,000 ÷ (40 × 52) = $36.06/hour

Converting to Weekly and Monthly Pay

Knowing your weekly and monthly figures is just as important — most bills come monthly, while budgets are often planned weekly.

Weekly Pay

Weekly Pay = Hourly Rate × Hours per Week

At $30/hour × 40 hours = $1,200/week (gross).

Monthly Pay (Simple Method)

The simplest way to estimate gross monthly pay from an annual salary:

Monthly Pay = Annual Salary ÷ 12

A $60,000 salary gives you $5,000/month gross. But remember: this is your gross pay before taxes and deductions.

Bi-Weekly Pay

Many employers pay every two weeks (26 pay periods per year):

Bi-Weekly Pay = Annual Salary ÷ 26

For a $65,000 salary: $2,500 per bi-weekly paycheck (gross). Note that twice a year you will receive three paychecks in a month if paid bi-weekly.

Gross vs. Net: The Most Important Distinction

All the calculations above give you gross pay — the amount before any deductions. Your net pay (take-home pay) is what actually hits your bank account.

Typical deductions include:

  • Federal income tax — progressive brackets from 10% to 37%
  • State income tax — varies from 0% (Texas, Florida) to 13.3% (California)
  • Social Security (FICA) — 6.2% up to the wage cap
  • Medicare — 1.45% (plus 0.9% surcharge for high earners)
  • Pre-tax benefits — 401(k), HSA, health insurance premiums
  • Regional levies — CA SDI, WA Cares, NY PFL, etc.

Examples: Salary Calculations in Real Life

Example 1: Full-Time Employee Converting Annual to Hourly

You are offered a job at $85,000/year. You want to know the hourly rate to compare with other offers:

  • Standard hours: 40/week
  • $85,000 ÷ (40 × 52) = $40.87/hour
  • Weekly gross: $1,634.62
  • Monthly gross: $7,083.33

Example 2: Part-Time Worker Calculating Annual Salary

You work 25 hours/week at $22/hour:

  • $22 × 25 × 52 = $28,600/year gross
  • Weekly: $550
  • Monthly (avg): $2,383.33

Note that part-time workers may not receive the same benefits (health insurance, paid time off) as full-time employees, so factor those costs into your comparison.

Example 3: Contractor vs. Employee Comparison

A contract role offers $60/hour but no benefits. As a W-2 employee, you might get $100,000/year with benefits worth ~$25,000 (health insurance, 401(k) match, PTO):

  • Contract annualized: $60 × 40 × 52 = $124,800
  • But you pay both halves of FICA (15.3% vs. 7.65% as employee)
  • Self-employment tax: ~$19,094
  • After self-employment tax: ~$105,706 — compare with $100,000 + benefits

The decision often comes down to whether you need benefits and prefer stability, or want the higher gross income of contracting.

Overtime and Hourly Calculations

If you are an hourly non-exempt employee in the US, you are entitled to overtime pay at 1.5× your regular rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek.

To calculate overtime pay:

Overtime Rate = Regular Hourly Rate × 1.5
Overtime Pay = Overtime Rate × Overtime Hours

If you earn $20/hour and work 50 hours in a week:

  • 40 hours × $20 = $800 (regular pay)
  • 10 hours × $30 = $300 (overtime pay)
